Lucretius was a Roman poet and , living in the last years of the Roman Republic (born around 99 BC, died around 55 BC — the birth year is not certain). He is remembered for one long poem, De rerum natura (On the Nature of Things). In it he tries to explain the world in calm, physical terms: everything is made of tiny bits of stuff moving in empty space; the gods, if they exist, do not run our lives; death is not something to fear. He was following the Greek Epicurus, and writing in Latin verse so Romans would actually read it. Students meet him in history or philosophy class, not in daily English. The name looks a little like , and the old Roman family name Lucretius may come from lucrum (“profit”), but that is only a maybe — do not treat the poet as “the money guy.”
