Luanda is the capital city of Angola, a country on the west coast of Africa. It sits on the Atlantic Ocean and is by far Angola’s biggest city: the government is there, and so is most of the country’s business and its main port. Portuguese is the official language, a leftover from when Portugal ruled the place, so maps keep a Portuguese spelling. Though actually, many people outside Africa have never had to say the name, so even newsreaders sometimes hesitate. For a learner it is a place-name, nothing more fancy: capital of Angola, on the sea, Portuguese in official life. The usual stress is on the second part: lu-AN-da. Luanda is the city; Angola is the country.
