A low-spirited person feels unhappy, heavy, and without energy — down, in a quiet grey way. It is close to sad or depressed, but a little old-fashioned and a little soft. You are more likely to meet it in stories than in a young person's chat. People more often say they are in low spirits, or they feel low, than they say 'I am low-spirited'. It is about mood. Though actually, it does not have to mean a long illness of the mind; it can be a short grey patch after bad news. An older meaning, 'not brave', has almost died out, so do not reach for that.

組成low (not high, not bright) + spirited (from spirits, meaning mood). The idea is that your spirits — your mood — are sitting low.
