Low-down means dishonest and . A low-down trick is a mean trick that is not fair. You can call a person low-down, or the thing they did. It is everyday speech, a little old-fashioned, and it often sounds American — more like a film than a school essay. It is a strong word: you are not saying someone made a small mistake; you are saying they were dirty about it. Do not mix this with “the low-down” (with the): that is a different use, meaning the real facts or the inside story.
