A lotus is a large water flower, often pink or white, that grows out of muddy water on a long stem with round floating leaves. It's an important symbol in Buddhism and , standing for purity growing out of difficult conditions, since the clean flower rises up out of the mud. "Lotus position" is also the name of a cross-legged sitting position used in yoga and meditation.
