Lothian was a region in the south-east of Scotland. Edinburgh, the capital city, sat inside it. In 1996 it was split into four: East Lothian, the City of Edinburgh, Midlothian, and West Lothian. People still say “the Lothians” for that whole area around Edinburgh. It is only a place name. You say it roughly “LOH-thee-ən.”

組成From Old English Loðene, Loþene, perhaps from Proto-Brythonic *Lugudūniānā or Proto-Celtic *lutā. A. D. Mills says it may be named after a man called Leudonus. Scholars are not of one mind, so the “perhaps” stays.
