Longitude is how far east or west a place is on the Earth. We measure it in degrees from an imaginary north–south line through Greenwich in London (the prime meridian). The longitude lines themselves run from the North Pole to the South Pole. Latitude is the other number — north or south of the . You need both to pin a point on a map. Sailors, map-makers, and phones with GPS use this; in daily talk you rarely need the word. It came into English from Old French, from Latin longitūdō, “length,” from longus, “long.” A classroom hook is that longitude lines look like the long ones, pole to pole — useful, but that is a memory trick, not the whole history. Pair it with latitude; do not swap them.
