    If you write something in longhand, you write it by hand and you write the words out in full. You are not typing, and you are not using shorthand — those special tiny marks people once used to catch speech fast. A teacher may want a longhand draft; a witness may give a longhand statement. “Hand” here means handwriting. “Long” is only there because the words are not cut short; nobody's hand is long. These days most of us type, so longhand often just means “by hand, in ordinary writing,” even when nobody in the room still knows shorthand. It can be a noun (write it in longhand) or an adverb (she wrote it longhand).
