Lomé is the capital of , a country in West Africa. It is also ’s largest city and its main port, on the Gulf of Guinea, so goods and people come and go by sea as well as by road. In English it is a place-name: you go to Lomé, you fly into Lomé. who only know a handful of world capitals may never have heard of it; that is no failing. is a small country where French is the official language, which is why the name comes into English in a French shape, with the accent on the e: Lomé. The city grew as a port and a colonial-era centre, and it is still where government and much of the country’s trade sit.

組成English took the name from French Lomé. The French form comes from Ewe, a language of that coast: alotimé, “in the middle of the alo plants.” The name first described a place among those plants.
