A lollipop is a hard sweet of boiled sugar on a stick. You hold the stick and suck the sugar; that is the whole object. In American English this is the ordinary word, and films and shops have carried it everywhere. In British English people also say lolly, which may mean this sweet or an ice lolly — ice on a stick. Parents and children say lollipop; it is not formal. People sometimes stretch it to any sweet on a stick, even a soft one, but the old core is the hard kind. Britain has an extra nickname: a lollipop lady or lollipop man is the person who stops cars with a round sign so children can cross — the sign looks a bit like a giant lollipop. That is a crossing guard, not candy.

組成English has long felt it as loll + y + pop, probably through lolly, old slang for the tongue or the head. It is recorded from 1784. A story you will hear — that it comes from Romani words for “red apple” — is almost certainly wrong. Candy apples became well known about a hundred years after lollipop was already in English, and the first lollipops were probably small cheap sweets, not apples on sticks.
