Loki is a god in the old Norse stories — the myths of the Viking north. Many school books, and the ’s dictionary line you may have seen, call him the god of evil and destruction. That is tidy, and a bit too tidy. In the old poems he is the clever trouble-maker: he lies, he changes shape, he helps the other gods and then he hurts them. In some tellings he is bound to as a kind of blood-; he is also the one who brings about terrible things, including the death of the beloved god Baldr, and he stands against the gods when the world ends at Ragnarök. So he is not “the Norse devil” in a Christian way, even though later readers often dress him as a simple villain. Today almost every student meets Loki first in Marvel films, as Thor’s jealous adopted . That is a modern story using the old name. In a mythology class, Loki means the figure in the old Icelandic poems, not the film.
