A locust is a kind of that, at times, gathers in a huge flying crowd. That crowd can strip fields of food in hours. They are well known in parts of Africa and Asia, and in old stories. One locust on its own is only an insect; the fear is the swarm. People sometimes stretch the word to a crowd that eats up everything in its path, though that can sound . There is another, quieter sense: some trees are called locust trees because their seed pods look a little like the insect — the sits in that family of names. Spell it carefully beside locus, the place-word. Though actually Latin locusta named the insect and, in the same breath, a lobster-like creature, which is why langouste (a lobster on a menu) is a sister word.
