Locoweed is a plant of dry country in North America, especially the west. Horses, cows and sheep that eat a lot of it become ill. They may walk in a strange way, act wild or weak, and sometimes they die. Ranchers named it from Spanish loco, “mad,” because the sick animals look as if they have gone mad; weed is just the English word for a wild plant. It is not a garden flower and not a name for cannabis. You will not meet the plant in Taiwan. The word lives in farming, vet talk, and writing about the American range.
