A locket is a small piece of jewellery on a chain around the neck. The special part is the tiny metal case: it opens, and you can put a little photo, a lock of hair, or another keepsake inside, then close it again. It is more private than a plain pendant, which is only a shape that hangs and does not open. Lockets feel old-fashioned to some younger people, and precious to others — a grandmother’s gift, a sweetheart’s picture — but jewellers still sell them. Though actually, people also wear lockets just because they like the look, with nothing inside.
