A lobotomy is the operation itself: a surgeon cuts into a lobe of the brain (a rounded part), most often the frontal lobe behind the forehead, to treat mental problems. For a few decades it was famous, and some hospitals were even proud to do it. Patients were sometimes awake; the tools were simple and rough. A few people did become calmer. Many others lost drive, humour, or the chance of a full life. Though actually, “remove part of the brain” is the tidy line. Often the surgeon did not lift a piece out like a slice of fruit, but cut the white paths that link the front of the brain to the rest. Today you will meet the word in history, in films, and as a harsh joke about making a person or a thing empty-headed. As a real treatment for mental illness, it has almost gone.
