Llandudno is a town on the north coast of Wales, between the sea and a high piece of land that sticks out into the water. It grew as a holiday town: a pier, a wide beach, hotels looking at the sea, families coming from English cities for the sea air. People still go as tourists. The name is Welsh, and Welsh is still heard in the area. In English you treat it as a place name with a capital L. The Welsh ll at the start is not the English l in like; it is a hissing sound made at the side of the tongue. Many English speakers say something like “Lan-DID-no,” and that is what you will usually hear. It is this town, not a general word for any Welsh seaside place.
