Liverpool is a city in the northwest of England, on the River , near the sea. It grew as a great port. Many people know it for the Beatles, who started there, and for football — Liverpool F.C. is famous worldwide, and Everton is the city’s other club. The local accent is called . A person from the city is a , a slightly playful name. The place name is old English: a pool of thick, muddy water. The liver part meant thick water, the colour and thickness of liver, not the idea that the city is an organ. It is a proper name, so it takes a capital L.
