Littoral means the land and water along a coast — the strip where sea and shore live next to each other. As a noun, the littoral is that coastal area. As an adjective, littoral winds, towns, or waters belong to it. You meet it in geography, ecology, and military talk about ships that work close to shore. It is a specialist word; everyday English just says coastal or the coast. Though actually, how wide the littoral is depends on who is talking. A biologist may mean the zone the tide wets; a navy may mean a much broader coastal belt. The usual spelling has two t’s, but that extra t is a late medieval add-on. A more classical spelling, litoral, with one t, still turns up.
組成From Late Latin littoralis, from litoris, the genitive of litus ‘shore’. The doubled t is a later spelling; the older litoral is closer to the Latin. French littoral and Spanish litoral are cousins. More distantly, English lido (an outdoor pool) comes via Italian lido ‘beach, shore’.
