To keep your ears ready because a sound may come, and you do not want to miss it. It is almost always "listen out for something": listen out for the doorbell, listen out for your name. It feels a bit more British; Americans often just say "listen for". No object goes between "listen" and "out" — the thing you are waiting for comes after "for".
