A lioness is a female lion. In a wild group, the lionesses usually do most of the hunting; the male lion is the one people notice first because of his mane. The home meaning is always the animal. People sometimes stretch it a little for a fierce, protective woman — a mother standing up for her children, or a player who goes at the game with that kind of fire — but that is extra colour, not a separate dictionary life. The word is ordinary and clear; you meet it in nature films, zoos, and stories.
