Linus is a boy in the American cartoon strip Peanuts, the same world as Snoopy and Charlie Brown. He is the thoughtful child, the one who talks about life in a serious, funny way — and he is famous for one picture: he carries a soft blanket with him everywhere. Without it he would not feel happy or sure of himself. English speakers still talk about a “security blanket” because of him: a thing you keep close because it makes you feel safe, even when you are no longer small. Here the word is only that character’s name, not a common noun for any boy.
