A lintel is the strong bar that sits across the top of a door or a window. It is often stone or wood; in newer buildings it may be steel or concrete. Its job is to hold up the wall above the opening, so the door or window itself does not have to carry that weight. Builders and people who talk about old houses use the word. Everyday speakers often just say “the top of the frame” and never learn it. It is a quiet, technical word, not a poetic one, and it always means that cross-piece, not the sides of the frame.

組成From Middle English lyntel, from Old French lintel, from Vulgar Latin *līntellus, a small form of *līmitellus, from Latin līmes “boundary, limit.” Equivalent to limit + the small-ending -el: a little “limit” piece across the top of the opening.
