Linoleum is a floor covering sold in sheets or tiles. The real, older kind was made from flax oil mixed with ground cork and other stuff, pressed onto a cloth backing — strong, a bit shiny, easy to wipe. An English maker, Frederick Walton, coined the name around 1864 as a trade name; it was never registered as a trademark, and the courts later treated it as an ordinary word — one of the first product names to go that way. Though actually, in shops now linoleum and vinyl get mixed: vinyl is plastic; true linoleum is the flax-oil kind, and some people still prefer it because it lasts and is not pure plastic. The word feels a little old in daily speech, but it is still the right name in shops and building talk.
