Lindisfarne is a small island off the north-east coast of England. People also call it Holy Island, and the two names point to the same place. For part of each day you can reach it by a road that the sea covers when the tide comes in, so you have to watch the time. There was a famous house for monks there, and a beautiful book called the Lindisfarne Gospels. In 793, raiders from the north attacked it; many school history books start the Viking story in England with that attack. It is a place name, so it takes a capital L.

組成The name is old (Old English Lindisfarena), and scholars are not sure. One idea is that the first part points to Lindsey, an old area of Lincolnshire, and the second to travellers, so roughly “island of the people who travel to and from Lindsey.” Another idea looks to old Irish words for lake and land. Compare the nearby Farne Islands. None of this is certain.
