A linden is a tall tree with heart-shaped leaves and sweet-smelling flowers in summer. Bees love those flowers, and people sometimes dry them for tea. The wood is pale and soft. In British English this same tree is also called a lime tree — though actually that lime is not the small green fruit you put in a drink. The fruit lime is a different plant. Cities often plant lindens along streets because they give good shade. The English noun grew from an older adjective that meant “made of this tree.”

組成From an old adjective linden, “of the lind tree”: lind (the old name for this tree) + -en (made of). Cognate with German linden. The noun in English grew out of that adjective.
