    Lima is the capital city of Peru, on the dry Pacific coast of South America. It is the country’s main city for government, business, and factories, and it has a university from the 1500s — among the oldest in the Americas. English speakers say LEE-ma for the city. Though actually, a lot of first meet these letters in lima bean, and that bean is named after this city, but in English the bean is usually said LY-ma. Same spelling, two sounds. Today many people also know Lima for its food, but the school-book picture is still: capital, industry, old university.

組成Borrowed from Spanish Lima, from Classical Quechua Limaq, “the one who speaks,” from rimay, “to speak.” The change of r to l, and the dropping of the final q, come from the old coastal Quechua of that area and from the way Spanish took the name.
