- 1
A lilt is a pleasant rise and fall in sound — in a voice, or in a tune. The voice does not stay flat; it moves up and down in an easy, almost singing way. People often use lilt about Irish, Scottish, or Welsh speech, though actually any voice can have one: we just notice it more when it sounds musical to us. In music it is that same gentle swing that makes you want to tap a foot. The word can also be a verb: to lilt the words is to say or sing them with that rise and fall. It is a kind, word, a little more at home in writing and careful talk than in short everyday chat.
