In an ancient Jewish tradition, Lilith is a female devil — an evil spirit. The story says she was Adam's first wife, before Eve, and that she left because she would not obey. Later tellings also picture her as a vampire: a spirit that sucks people's blood, and sometimes as a danger to babies. Though actually the Bible itself does not tell this tale; it grew later in Jewish lore, and then in books, films, and games, where Lilith often stands for a dark, powerful woman. It is a name (capital L) for this figure, not a common word for any bad woman.
