If someone is light-fingered, they are likely to steal — not with a weapon, but with quick, quiet hands. The picture is fingers so “light” (not heavy) that you never feel them in your pocket or on a stall. People use it for and for a person who cannot pass a small object without taking it. It is a little old-fashioned and a little : calling someone light-fingered is softer than calling them a thief, though actually the meaning is the same. You hear it in warnings and in stories more than in a police report. It is about petty taking, not a bank job.
