A lifeline is a rope or line that you throw to someone in the water, so they can hold on and not drown. Sailors and rescue workers use a real one made of rope. But most of the time now, people use this word for something (or someone) that saves you in a hard situation - not a real rope at all. If someone lends you money when you have none, that money is a lifeline. If your job is your only way to pay rent, your job is your lifeline. On a TV quiz show, when a player can ask a friend for help, that is called a 'lifeline' too.
