A very small country in the Alps, sitting between Austria and Switzerland. The capital is . Only a few tens of thousands of people live there (about 37,000 in 2014). They speak German. It is rich, and many foreign companies put a main office there because taxes are low and the banks were long famous for keeping clients’ business quiet. Though actually, that bank secrecy is not as total as the old stories say — but the picture of a tiny, wealthy, tax-friendly state is still why the name turns up in news about money. Do not mix it up with Luxembourg, another small rich country in Europe, further west.
組成Borrowed from German Liechtenstein: an old form liecht (“light, bright”) + Stein (“stone”), so “bright stone.”
