A German white wine that is rather sweet and easy to drink. In Britain it became the bottle people buy when they do not really drink wine — cheap, mild, a little looked down on by anyone who cares about wine. The German name sounds grand. Though actually, a bottle labelled Liebfraumilch today is often a blend from a wide area, not one special , and it is sweeter and softer than the dry German wines now praise. Students in Taiwan may never see it on a menu; they will meet it in British stories and old supermarket lists. It is wine. It is not milk.

組成From German Liebfrauenmilch, literally “beloved Lady’s milk.” The Lady is Mary. The name points to the Liebfrauenkirche (the Church of Our Lady) in Worms, Germany, near which the wine was first made.
