A rather heavy, old-fashioned noun for living without holding yourself back, especially with sex. If someone is accused of licentiousness, people mean they break the usual rules about who they sleep with, and they do it in a wild or careless way. You meet it in novels, sermons, history, and moral argument — almost never at the dinner table. Young people would say someone is sleeping around, or living a wild life. Though actually, writers sometimes stretch it to any life with no self-control (drink, pleasure, money), but the sexual meaning is still the centre. It names a way of behaving, not a legal paper.
