Libreville is the capital city of Gabon, a country on the west coast of Central Africa. It sits on the Atlantic Ocean and is Gabon’s largest city as well as the seat of government. The name is French and means “free town.” France gave it that name in the nineteenth century, when the place became a settlement for people taken off slave ships and set free. You will see it on maps and in news about Gabon, not as an ordinary English word for anything else. It is a proper name, so it keeps a capital L.
