A libretto is the words of an opera, an , or a musical play — the story and the lines the singers sing, not the music itself. The music has its own name: the score. If you buy a little book in the theatre that prints those words, that book is also a libretto; the Italian word means a little book, and that is how it started. You will meet it in writing about opera and musicals, not in talk about pop songs. For a pop song, people say lyrics. Though actually, some writers stretch libretto to any long sung story on stage, even when it is not grand opera. It is a specialist, slightly fancy noun. Say it li-BRET-oh.
