A Liberian is a person from Liberia, the country on the west coast of Africa next to Sierra Leone, with its capital at Monrovia. Used as a describing word, Liberian means “of that country”: Liberian food, the Liberian flag, a Liberian passport. English is the official language there, but Liberian English has its own sound and words; it is not the English most Taiwanese students learn in school. The word is the country name Liberia plus -an, the usual ending that means “from that place” (American, Korean, Ghanaian work the same way). It always takes a capital L, because it comes from a country name. Though actually, like many such words, it does two jobs at once: the person, and the “from there” describing word. You will see it in news, sports teams, and talk about people and culture — not as a name for the country itself. The country is Liberia; the people and the describing word are Liberian.
