LGBT is the abbreviation — an initialism, each letter named — of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender. It names people, and also the communities and rights movements around them. It grew out of earlier LGB in the late 1980s in the United States and was used as a self-name in gay-rights work from about 1990. The T has been read as transgender or, in older use, ; today transgender is the usual word, and is more specific and more contested. People add letters as the conversation grows: Q for queer or questioning, I for , A for asexual, and a plus (LGBTQ+) for identities the short list does not catch. Some speakers still say LGBT; some prefer the longer form so fewer people feel left out. It works as an adjective (LGBT rights, LGBT students) and as a noun for the group (the LGBT community). It is the community’s own label in English public life, not a slur. In Taiwan you will also hear 同志, which is older, warmer, and a bit wider in everyday talk.
