1. 1

Lexicographical is the adjective that belongs to dictionary-making. Lexicographical work, a lexicographical decision, lexicographical method: all of these mean “in the craft of writing dictionaries.” Though actually, a short gloss like “the profession of writing dictionaries” is the noun . This word does not name the profession; it describes things that sit inside it. You will also see lexicographic, without -al. They mean the same. American academic writing slightly prefers lexicographic; both are formal, and neither belongs in casual speech. A lexicographical problem is often a human one wearing a technical coat: the word is messy in real life, and the entry has to be honest and still small enough to use.
