A leveller is something that knocks away the usual differences between people, so that the rich and the poor, the powerful and the weak, stand in the same place. Death is the classic example — people say “death is a great leveller” — and serious illness can be one too: in a hospital bed, rank matters much less. The word can also be used more lightly for anything that treats everyone the same, like a storm that hits every house on the street. The picture comes from making things level, as you level ground. British spelling is leveller; American spelling is often leveler. In history, the Levellers were also a radical group in seventeenth-century England who wanted more equality — the same idea, turned into a name.
