A let-up is a pause or a lightening in something unpleasant that has been going on — rain, pain, heat, noise, pressure at work, a stream of questions. The sentence you will hear most is There was no let-up: the trouble did not stop, even for a short time. With a let-up, it did stop, or it grew easier. People also use the two-word verb let up (The rain let up after lunch). The noun is often written with a , let-up; you may also see letup as one word. It is everyday English, not stiff, and it almost always belongs with something you want to end. A pleasant evening does not “have a let-up.” Though actually, the easing can be tiny — a let-up of ten minutes in a storm still counts.
