A word used to say what you want to avoid — it means something close to 'so that ... doesn't happen' or 'in case.' 'She whispered, lest anyone hear her' means she whispered so that no one would hear her. It's a fairly formal or old-fashioned word — you'll see it in careful writing, warnings, or stories, but people rarely use it in everyday chatting.

From Middle English les te 'less that', from Old English þȳ lǣs þe 'whereby less that', with þȳ dropped and the rest contracted.
古英文 þȳ lǣs þe 去掉 þȳ 後縮短而成，lǣs 就是 less。
