Leprosy is a serious long illness caused by tiny living things in the body. It mainly hurts the skin and the nerves. Over time a person may lose feeling in the hands and feet, and the flesh can be damaged. Today doctors usually call it Hansen's disease, after the doctor who found the cause. It does not jump from person to person as easily as people used to think; it needs close contact over a long time. Medicine can treat it, especially if it is found early. For hundreds of years people were terribly afraid of it and forced sick people to live apart. A lot of that fear came from old holy books. Though actually, the skin sickness named in those old texts was not always this same disease — the old word was used more loosely, and later readers folded several skin illnesses into one name. In careful talk now, Hansen's disease is the kinder name, because leprosy still carries that old shame.
組成From Norman leprosie, from Middle French leprosie, probably from leprous + -ie (like English -y); a Medieval Latin leprōsia is possible but was used of leprosy hospitals. Behind that is Latin lepra, from Greek λέπρα. The move from a scaly skin illness toward today's Hansen's disease happened in large part because Greek λέπρα was used to translate Hebrew tzaraath in the Septuagint, and that wording then passed into the New Testament and later Latin.
