Lengthwise means in the direction of the longest side, or lying that way. If you cut a lengthwise, you cut along the long side, not across the short one. It can describe a thing (a lengthwise cut) or tell you how to do something (slice it lengthwise). British English also says lengthways — same meaning. People may just say “the long way.” Though actually, the word needs a long side to work with: a round tomato has no real lengthwise until you pick an axis. You meet it in kitchens, workshops, and packing instructions more than in chat. It is a calm, practical word, not a fancy one.
