Legitimacy is the quality of being accepted as real, fair, or lawful — a government has legitimacy when people believe it has the right to rule, usually because it was chosen fairly. We also use it more generally for anything that seems valid or has a good reason behind it: 'the legitimacy of his claim' means whether it's actually fair or true.
