A legionary is a member of a legion. The picture most history books give you is a soldier in a Roman legion — the huge army unit of ancient Rome, thousands of men under one eagle. In that world, a legionary was usually a Roman citizen foot-soldier, not a recruited from another land. Writers also use it as an adjective: a legionary fortress, a legionary eagle. Later groups have called themselves legions too, so the word can follow them, but in English classrooms it almost always means Rome. It is a history-book word, not a street word.
