    If a person or a rule is legalistic, they care too much about small points in the law, or in any set of rules, and not enough about why the rule is there. It is almost always a complaining word. A legal answer can be careful and fair; a legalistic one follows the exact words and loses the point. Schools, churches, and offices get called legalistic too, not only courts. Though actually, the person may think they are just being exact; the word shows that you do not agree.
