Leftovers are the food that is left after a meal is finished — the extra rice, the extra chicken, whatever nobody ate. Most families keep leftovers in the fridge to eat again the next day. As an adjective, 'leftover' can describe anything extra that's left after the main thing is used, not just food — 'leftover paint', 'leftover time', 'leftover fabric'. It's a very common, everyday word, used the same way by people of all ages.
