Leakey is a family name. In books about very old bones and early humans, “the Leakeys” means a British family of scientists who dug in East Africa, mostly Tanzania. Mary Leakey (1913–96), her husband Louis Leakey (1903–72), and their son Richard Leakey (1944–) found many fossils and early human bones. Those finds helped people see how humans first developed. You will meet the name in school and museum texts, not in everyday chat. It is always a name, so it starts with a capital L. Though actually, later people in the same family kept doing this work too; textbooks usually name these three.
