1. 1

A leafless tree or bush has no leaves on it. In a cold winter, many trees stand leafless. A leafless branch looks bare. Though actually, leafless does not mean dead — a tree with no leaves in January may be quite alive and waiting for spring. In Taiwan many trees keep their leaves all year, so this word shows up more in stories about colder countries, or about a plant that has dropped its leaves. It is a plain describing word. You can say a leafless tree or the trees were leafless.
