A layette is the whole starter set of clothes and small things a new baby needs — tiny shirts, sleepsuits, , maybe a blanket — often given as a gift before the birth. It is a rather old shop-and-gift word; younger parents may just say baby clothes or newborn things. You still see it on packing lists and in older books. It came into English from French, and it has nothing to do with the English verb lay.
